Enzyme histochemical studies carried out on human masticatory muscles showed that human masticatory muscles consist basically of three types of muscle fibers : fast-twitch-fatiguing (FF type), fast-twitch-fatigue-resistant (FF type), and slow-twitch-fatigue-resistant (S type) muscle fibers. It was also shown that the FF type muscle fiber have a smaller diameter than the S type muscle fibers, indicating the degeneration of masticatory muscles in human beings. Comparison of muscle fiber types of masseter muscles in variousmammals indicated that all the muscle fibers of ruminant masseter are S type and those of rodent masseter are F type, while omnivores and carnivores have all three types of muscle fibers. This indicates that human masticatory muscles have adapted as an omnivore.
