The present study was undertaken to find a suitable material for biochemical study on phosphatases in mammalian taste organ. Each experiment was carried out with six foliate papillae of rabbit dissected thoroughly under a stereoscopic microscope. The foliate papillae were homogenized and centrifuged to obtain P_1 (900×g, 10min), P_2 (5,000×g, 10min), P_3 (8,000×g, 20min), P_4 (105,000×g, 60min) and S_4. The highest specific activities of Ca^<2+>-ATPase, Mg^<2+>-ATPase and Ca^<2+>, Mg^<2+> ATPase were obtained in P_4 fractions. The specific activity of Mg^<2+>-ATPase in the P_4 fraction of the foliate papillae of rabbit was several hundred times higher than that obtained in bovine circumvallate papillae by Lum & Henkin.
