Rats appear to have a metabolic pathway different from that of mice in detoxicating arsenic in that rats accumulate arsenic in the blood (erythrocytes). Two experiments were carried out in order to determine the effects of DMSA and DMPS on the arsenic poisoned rats and to compare the results obtained with those of mice. In the first experiment, using arsenic poisoned rats, both DMSA and DMPS promoted the excretion of arsenic, in contrast to the results of mice previously reported in which those antidotes only accelerated the excretion of arsenic (Table 1). In the second experiment, both groups of rats and mice were given mixture of arsenic and DMSA or DMPS, respectively.
