内容記述 Much of the research on functional Class III malocclusion is based on data taken in the intercuspal position or which includes cases where skeletal factors are significant; accord-ingly many aspects concerning the diagnosis of this condition, the evaluation of the efficacy of treatment, and changes in maxillofacial morphology after correction of the anterior cross bite, remain obscure. In this research, morphological changes in the face, teeth, and jaws, which occurred after correction of the anterier cross bite with an activator, were examined using lateral cephalograms in cases of functional Class III malocclusion showing little abnormality in the maxillomandibular relationship. The data come from 12 males (aged 7 years 5 months to 10 years 10 months, averaging 8 years 8 months) and 12 females (aged 7 years 1 month to ll years 2 months) showing functional Class III malocclusion. The predicted posttreatment position of the mandible was obtained from lateral cephalograms taken in the centric position at the time of the initial visit. The following conclusions were obtained from the results of these investigations. 1. A clear difference was recognized in the cephalometric values for the position of the mandible between cephalograms taken in the intercuspal position and those taken in the centric position, indicating the importance of obtaining data for the centric position in cases of functional Class III malocclusion. 2. From a comparison of the predicted and actual posttreatment positions of the mandible, the accuracy of the method of prediction was confirmed. 3. After correction of the anterier cross bite in these 24 cases of functional Class III malocclusion, a reduction in the A-B (FH) value was observed in 16 cases, and no change or an increase was found in 8 cases. 4. Among the cases showing a reduction in the A-B (FH) value, a positive correlation (r=0.57) was observed between the A-B (FH) and the N-B (FH) values. In cases showing no change or an increase in the A-B (FH) value, A-B (FH) was found to be correlated positively with ANS-PNS (r=0.76), and negatively with the ramus(r=0.75). 5. Statistical analysis of the data showed that it is difficult to predict, at the time of the initial visit, whether the A-B (FH) value is likely to decrease after treatment, as opposed to remaining stable or increasing.
