| 内容記述 | Through Dr. Shinzo Watanabe who was a pioneer in dentistry, I would like to analyse the records of examinations in his posthumozs works to seek an image of dentists in the Meiji Era. Since there were no insurance systems in those days, every medical examination was a general exarination-meaning that patients had to be examined without insurance. However Dr. Watanabe set up rough standards to help every patient pay the fee for a medical examianation equally and at the same rate. As for the conditions of practice, 432 patients were examined in the frist year alone from which he earned 1413 yen as his income. His income increased year by year so that after 15 years it had increased 8.5 times his stating salary. That was partly because the number of dentists was not so large compared with today, and the same thing can be said for the nomber of decayed teeth. In addition, it seems that Dr. Watanabe was very popular among his patients. It is interesting that in his documents he had less patients in February and December, and that he could earn much more money when fewer patients came. It seems the same way for todays dentists. | |||||||
