An epulis-like tumor was appeared in the upper left second premolar region of a 53-year-old man. Ordinary microscopy on the resected material revealed that the lesion consisted of a fibroma including many scattered epithelial nests resembling the epithelial rests of Malassez and a few calcified materials. The tumor was, therefore, diagnosed as a peripheral odontogenic fibroma, and thought to be originated from periodontal ligament because of its connection with the tumor and of the onset year. Electronmicroscopically, elongated cells were seen among the complicated collagen fibers and epithelial nests were resembled to basal cells of oral mucous membrane or epithelial rests of Malassez. This may be the fourth case of the tumor reported in Japan. |
