A case of acute osteomyelitis, which appeared in both sides of the mandible of a 18-year-old man, was reported. Although modern antibiotic therapy resulted in a sharp fall in odontgenic infections, occurrence of opportunistic infection and increases of incidence of resistant strains and anaerobes have been described as a major cause of serious infection. In this case osteomyelitis appeared almost simultaneously in both sides of the mandible, and Streptococcus intermedius, which is anaerobic gram positive coccus and may be uncommonly recognized in osteomyelitis, was only isolated by needle aspiration done in both sides of the mandibular abscess. Streptococcus intermedius was discussed as causative organism of osteomyelitis because of the changing antimicrobial susceptibilities of pathogenic bacteria. |
