| 内容記述 | Recent studies in olfaction have made several discoveries concerning odor discrimination, including the following: i) Mammals possess a thousand odorant receptor genes but only a single gene is expressed in each olfactory neuron, ii) Odorant receptors, which are G-pro-tein-coupled receptors, recognize specific structural motifs of odorant molecules, iii) Olfactory neurons, each expressing a specific receptor, project to only two fixed glomeruli in the olfactory bulb. Therefore, each odorant activates a specific combination of receptors which, in turn, produces a specific spatial pattern of activated glomeruli, thus enabling us to discriminate thousands of different odors. | |||||||
