内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Johannes Schultes (1595-1645), commonly called Scultetus was a great German surgeon of the 17th century. Born in Ulm on the Danube, on October 12, 1595, he went, at the very young age of fifteen, to Padua for the study of medicine. Here he came under the influence of Fabricius ab Aquapendente, prominent surgeon and anatomist, for whom he served as prosector. A doctorate in medicine, surgery, and philosophy was conferred upon him in 1621, after which he practiced for a short time in Padua and, later, in Vienna. At the age thirty he returned to Ulm in the capacity of city physician. This post he filled with distinction until his death in 1645 which occurred in Stuttgart (during visit to a patient). His famous book, Armamentarium Chirurgicum (Ulm, 1653 or 55), was published posthumously by his nephew who was also his namesake, called Scultetus the Younger, as well as his disciple and literary executor. The dedication to his book not only draws a picture of the elder Scultetus, but, also, in a charming manner, gives us some information as to his works and character. I will review this book. The original edition, published in 1653 or 55 contained 43 full-page illustrations. Translations into German, French, and English made the work accessible to those surgeons throughout Europe who lacked the ability to read the original Latin. It contains a complete catalogue of all known surgical instruments, methods of bandaging and splinting, and a vast number of operative procedures, all of which are illustrated in graphic detail by means of numerous plates. In addition, it contains a large number of case reports which give evidence of his surgical daring and skill. Particularly, I found the following instruments and treatments on dentistry. 1. Instruments; common dental forcepes, Crow's beak forceps, several kinds of pelicans, two special dental forceps, bifid and trifid elevators, dentiscalpia (scalpel for gum), silver cannula, screw dilator and so on. 2 Treatments; tumor-excisions of upper lip and palate, treatment of uvula gangrene, treatment of harelip, cauterization of pulp, extraction of malpositional tooth, giving liquid food to patient of trismus, palatine obturator with sponge, use of mouth dilator and speculum, removing of foreign bodies in throat and so on.
